Total Shareholder Return
An increase to shareholders in both stock price and dividends. Also referred to by the initialism TSR, total shareholder return is usually a percentage calculation. The numerator contains the stock price appreciation plus dividends, and the denominator has the beginning stock price. When companies make grants of performance shares, setting TSR goals to vest or pay out the award is a popular metric. (See the FAQ on performance shares elsewhere on this website.)
