Capital Loss Harvesting

Selling stock, a mutual fund, an ETF, or another security at a loss that you can then net against gains in your security, either in that year or in the future. This is a popular year-end strategy, though you need to be careful about the wash sale rule if you plan to repurchase the security or other type of investment. See the FAQ on netting capital gains and losses.
