Expensing

Taking an earnings charge for the value of equity compensation, such as stock options, instead of reporting the value in the footnotes of company financials. Expensing was voluntary for stock options until the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) made it mandatory in 2006 with FAS 123(R) (now called ASC Topic 718).
