Net Investment Income Tax (NIIT)

A 3.8% Medicare surtax (effective January 1, 2013) on investment income, such as interest, dividends, and stock-sale gains, for individuals, estates, and trusts with income over threshold amounts. See the related FAQ for details on how the NIIT applies to stock compensation.
