Nonqualified Stock Option (NQO or NQSO)

An employee stock option not meeting the IRS criteria for incentive stock options and therefore triggering a tax upon exercise. Income from the exercise of NQSOs is subject to the withholding of federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare taxes, and (if applicable) state income tax.
