Transfer Agent
An entity, often a division of a banking or other financial institution, that serves as the agent of a company responsible for keeping the official register of stockholders' names and the proper re-registration of new owners when a transfer of stock occurs. Most privately held companies, and some publicly traded companies, act as their own transfer agents.
