A special equity award given for reaching corporate, project, or individual performance goals, or for employee retention purposes, such as when employees have underwater options. These grants are usually made in addition to annual grants, or are annual grants made earlier than usual. No uniform usage of this term exists, for these grants can also be called performance grants, refresher grants, retention grants, or out-of-cycle grants.
