Deferred Compensation

Any type of compensation earned in one year but not paid until another year and therefore not taxed until that time. The compensation can be salary, a bonus, or some other form of compensation, such as severance payments, stock options, or restricted stock units. Deferral arrangements, whether qualified or nonqualified, must follow the tax laws and regulations to avoid immediate taxation and penalties. Deferred stock units can be a form of deferred compensation.
