Par Value

The nominal dollar value that an issuer assigns to a security. It appears on the stock certificate. For an equity security, e.g. the stock that underlies your equity grant, the par value is typically a small amount that is unrelated to the stock's market price. A startup company may issue stock at par value.

On a company's balance sheet, the par value is shown in the category of paid-in capital under stockholders' equity.
