Generally, a division into two branches or groups (from the Latin adjective bifurcatus "two-forked"). In the context of equity awards, bifurcation denotes a company's designation of stock options as either nonqualified stock options or incentive stock options. Companies indicate this either in transfer records or in plan records, or by issuing separate stock certificates.
