Dematerialization (Demat)

The practice of doing away with physical stock certificates for electronic bookkeeping records of share ownership. Instead of receiving actual stock certificates upon ESPP purchase, stock option exercise, or restricted stock/RSU vesting, you are now likely to have just an electronic record of your share ownership.
